Over the weekend, we checked out the new speakeasy that’s quietly been making its mark on Milwaukee’s cocktail scene over the last couple of weeks. The Back Door is luxurious, indulgent, and worth the splurge.
We saw a few things on Instagram here and there leading up to it, but what the overall experience would be like was a mystery to us. We’re glad for it too. Walking through the doors unassuming added to the experience. We could let our imagination run wild as we were entering the unknown.
That being said, we’ll try to not give too much away – it’s better if you check it out for yourself.
This speakeasy-style lounge felt exclusive and intimate, that despite sharing the bar with other patrons, you could still feel like you existed within your own space. It was dark and moody, seductively lit so that there was a breath of mystique.
Once you’re inside, the honking horns and hustle and bustle of Water Street become a distant memory, fading with each second you’re embraced by the dark… and the delicious smell of the space. It’s rare to find a bar that smells more like an Anthropology than, well, a bar.
The host was kind and welcoming and our server was incredibly helpful; offering up her thoughts and considerations as we deliberated the menu. Even with there only being a handful of drinks on the menu, the decision was tricky. Each of the cocktails on the list were tempting in their own way. From the espresso martini crafted with an orange vodka to the color transformation in the Empress of Blues, there was something special to find in each one.
We decided on the Empress of Blues, The Back Door, and The Last Ember Espresso – some of the most popular on their menu, and for good reason. Without divulging all of the details, the drinks were as elegant as you would expect and had wonderful flavors.
The espresso martini (Last Ember) was especially delicious and came with a heavy dose of foam and a flame! A vibrant green, The Back Door’s gin and absinthe concoction came in a petite goblet embellished with red pop rocks, while the Empress of Blues turned a beautiful periwinkle with the addition of the citrus pour to the gin and lavender base.
As with most elevated cocktail lounges in Milwaukee, the prices were on the higher end, with most of the drinks ranging between $15 and $20. But that’s to be expected when you’re dealing with a mixology menu that goes the extra mile to make your drink memorable.
The Back Door is a welcome new addition to Milwaukee’s cocktail scene and a great place to treat yourself or a special someone to – just make sure you have your code to get in.
