There’s something to be said about doctors, therapists, clinicians, or other professionals in the medical industry who go above and beyond to treat their patients. Take Sam Wagner, founder of Rehab Lab, for example; he built a chiropractic and physical therapy practice that flipped the traditional model on its head.
And, because of that, he’s expanded from one location in Appleton to a second one in Wauwatosa in only three years – all by giving his patients the time and attention they deserve. No more expedited, 10-minute appointments and a quick lookover. Nope, you’re getting a dedicated chunk of one-on-one time to sit and get to the bottom of your needs.
We talked with Sam to learn what makes Rehab Lab different and why the Milwaukee area was a natural choice for his clinic’s expansion.
How did Rehab Lab get its start? What is your background?
Rehab Lab started because I was frustrated with my experience as an athlete and the traditional model of chiropractic/physical therapy. Ten-minute visits, three patients stacked on top of each other, a hot pack, a sheet of exercises and a “see you next week”—that was not the model I wanted to be a part of, in fact I wanted to build the opposite of that.
Initially things started primarily with professional athletes and evolved to giving every single person the professional athlete experience: a full hour, one-on-one with their provider, to actually figure out the root cause of what’s going on instead of just chasing symptoms.
How long have you been in business? Have you faced major challenges or any triumph stories?
We started in Appleton, WI in July of 2023, and in under three years we grew across two locations, Appleton and Wauwatosa. The triumph and the challenge are kind of the same story: we did it with a high touch, hour-long appointment model focusing on being transformational over transactional. It’s harder to build, but it’s the right way to care for people, and the results have proven it out. Growing a second location while protecting that one-on-one experience has been the biggest ongoing challenge, you can’t cut corners on the thing that makes you different. Also growing our team was a challenge, and you can’t do anything without great people and our TEAM is the entire reason we are where we are at today! Their commitment to our patients and themselves is what makes our engine go!
What is Rehab Lab and why is it a good fit in the Milwaukee area?
Rehab Lab is a chiropractic and physical therapy practice built around 60-minute, one-on-one sessions for athletes and active people who want to get back to performing, not just stop hurting. The same approach we use with athletes competing at the professional level is the approach every patient gets, and Milwaukee is full of driven, active people who want that caliber of care! Recreational athletes, weekend warriors, former competitors who still train hard, that’s exactly who thrives in our model. There’s a real appetite here for care that takes you seriously and measures whether you’re actually getting better.
What’s the mission behind Rehab Lab?
Root cause care and that patients are people, not just a number. We’re not interested in managing your symptoms forever, we want to find what’s actually driving the problem, fix it, and give you the tools to stay ahead of it. Everything we do is built around objective, data-driven measurement, so you’re not guessing whether you’re improving. You can see it and feel heard the entire process.
What’s it like being a small business in MKE?
It’s a great community to build in. Milwaukee rewards businesses that show up authentically and do real work, people here can tell the difference between marketing and substance, and they support the real thing. Being small lets us stay deeply personal with every patient, which is the entire point.
What do you like about being in the Wauwatosa/Milwaukee area?
Tosa and Milwaukee have the perfect mix of neighborhood feel and serious athletic community. The people are genuine, they’re active, and they care abou their health and doing things the right way, which matches how we practice.
What’s your favorite part about what you’re doing?
The relationships and time. Getting to actually sit with someone, hear their whole story, and dig into the why behind their pain or performance plateau. Whether it’s an athlete from a professional league or someone training for their first 5K, that relationship is where the real work happens, and watching someone go from “I just want this to stop” to chasing a PR again or stating they could “run on the beach with my grandkids” never gets old!
What can people expect when going to Rehab Lab?
A full hour, one-on-one with your provider every single visit, not seven rushed minutes, not getting passed off to an aide. Your first visit is a real evaluation: we sit down, talk through your symptoms and goals, run you through a movement assessment, and give you a clear explanation of what’s actually driving the problem. You leave understanding your own body, not just holding a heat pack.
Our care combines hands-on chiropractic with a full physical therapy rehab toolkit: corrective exercise and mobility work, Active Release Technique, Graston / instrument-assisted soft tissue work, cupping, dry needling, and advanced therapies like Class IV Laser, Stem Wave and ARP Neuro. Then we layer in objective measurement, our VALD performance suite (ForceDecks, ForceFrame, NordBord, DynaMo, SmartSpeed), the same technology trusted at the highest levels of sport. That’s how we prove you’re improving instead of just telling you that you are. Every plan ends with practical guidance, and your own personal app led custom exercise program you can do at home, so the progress holds long after you leave.
The result is care built around the root cause, not symptom chasing. It’s the same standard, world class care for everyone who walks through the door whether you’re a professional athlete, a busy executive, or a parent trying to keep up with your kids.
Anything else we should know? Favorite stories or unique services?
What sets us apart is the combination of genuine one-on-one time and objective data. We work with athletes across every level, including clients who compete in professional sports leagues, and the standard never changes depending on who you are. Whether you’re a pro or a parent who wants to keep up with your kids, you get the same thing: we find the root cause, measure everything, and treat you like a person with a goal, not a number on a chart.
