If you’ve ever chased a perfect summer day down the Kinnickinnic, you’ve probably ended up at Barnacle Bud’s—the riverside hideaway that’s been delivering cold drinks and good vibes, for over 30 years.
What started as a reach-through window and three picnic tables is now a full-blown Milwaukee ritual, powered by Gene McKiernan, a lifelong tavern kid with deep roots and a staff that returns season after season (even when the hood system implodes on Memorial Day weekend—true story).
Bud’s is all about unfussy fun: breezy cocktails, dockside chill, and that “only in Milwaukee” energy where every day feels like the start of summer. And when winter rolls in? The team flips the script with Gene’s Supper Club, a cozy, creative pop-up that proves Bud’s can do refined dining without losing its tongue-in-cheek charm.
Here’s how a tiny marina bar became one of Milwaukee’s most beloved warm-weather institutions—and why locals keep coming back, no matter the season.
How did Barnacle Buds get its start?
Gene McKiernan’s father was a chef, so he has always been in the bar business since he was 8 years old, taverns, restaurants, etc.. Previously his local greatest claim to fame was the legendary Chump’s Rusty Bucket – back in Walker’s Point initial prime. Think Steny’s, Timers, Mugshots….
Back in 1992 he was looking for something to do with his summers and the opportunity popped up at Barnacle Bud’s. It was always called Barnacle Bud’s. Back then it was a reach through window where the outside bar is and about three picnic tables. Gene cooked and tended bar and his wife was the wait staff.
How long have you been in business? Have you faced any major challenges with growing your business or any triumph stories?
Gene’s Barnacle Bud’s will celebrate its 34th anniversary in 2026. The current surrounding real estate, Skipper Bud’s Marina, limits the potential for expansion, and it can be considered that the venue has reached its full capacity, both for what we can offer as space for guests and certainly behind the scenes, as to what backstock we can store.
Since most seating is outdoors and given our location (just a short distance from Lake Michigan) and obviously being in Wisconsin, weather remains our most consistent and significant challenge each and every year. Our primary natural attraction, the Kinnickinnick River, can present unique challenges. Notably, in 2019, during near-record high water levels, the phenomenon known as a seiche caused fluctuations in water levels that temporarily flooded our patio and occasionally obscured the deck, posing notable operational difficulties.
Barnacle Bud’s has experienced substantial growth over the years, which, while positive, introduces various logistical challenges when you consider the space constraints and weather issues.
Like any service industry business staffing can pose a challenging obstacle. As earlier mentioned, Bud’s began with a staff, that could be counted on one hand, to now more than ten times that at peak season. With each employee essential to keeping, it running seven days a week for 5 months, if not longer – weather depending. We can boast a 95% return rate of seasonal employees, and we even have second generation employees.
Anyone who has ever worked in the service industry can attest to a couple truths: the first being that this is a very transactional and incredibly transient industry, and the second being that you face different challenges and situations every single day, and I think this is where our staff truly shines. One of the best aspects of our business at Bud’s is that we have an incredible core of people who come back every single year(some having been here 20+ years), and they know that every day brings new challenges, some being fun, and others… not so much, with this spring being a prime example.
Unlike the past few years, since 2020, we have had warm dry springs where our business picked up immediately and we were off and running. This year however, was much more mild and rainy than we have got used to. So when around Memorial Day, the weather started to pick up, we were faced with one our our greatest challenges yet- our hood system suffered a catastrophic failure going into what we were prepared to being our first “big” weekend. Everyone ran the gamut of emotions pretty immediately, from what done do now, to how do we keep people employed without serving the food our guests have grown to know and love. But being that we have an incredible core of people, we came up with a menu of cold sandwiches and appetizers, and ran with it for 2 weeks. It required buy in from our front of house staff, management, and our kitchen. We even started jokingly referring to ourselves as “Barnacle Subs”.
In addition to overcoming difficulties, we also face other challenges, like, what happens when a seasonal restaurant keeps going because the weather stays warm. This fall, the weather stayed warm far longer than usual, which meant our team got stretched thin when everyone went back to school(our staff has many teachers), and we also needed to start preparing for our supper club pop-up, which completely re-imagines not onlybour food and drink menus, but also how we do service. Changing everything over has been a process in years past that could take weeks, and we accomplished it in a few days with a very small staff.
One of the best parts of the industry is the fact that no two days are ever identical, and in a seasonal outdoor business, that goes doubly so. This year, we ran with four different concepts, and watching our staff adapt, overcome and thrive is one of the most thrilling and rewarding parts of running Barnacle Bud’s.
What is Barnacle Buds, and why did you feel it would be a good fit in Milwaukee?
Barnacle Bud’s was first created by the marina’s owner to offer boaters a respite and to give his wife something to do. So, it already existed when Gene took ownership of it. Milwaukee has been very good to Gene again with his prior business (Chump’s Rusty Bucket) so it was a pretty easy decision to take a chance on such a unique place.
What’s the mission behind Barnacle Buds?
Basically to offer the public a casual place to have a good time, food, and drinks.
What is it like being a small business in MKE? If you’re a woman, minority, or LGBTQ+ owned business, please feel free to touch on your experiences as an entrepreneur in that space as well.
Obviously, all businesses have their share of ups and downs. But I feel like being in a small business in Milwaukee especially is a good spot to be in. There seems to be a lot of support for small businesses. I think Milwaukeeans are proud of their city and have a strong kinship towards their communities.
What do you like about being in Milwaukee?
Milwaukee is the epitome of a Midwest City. It has it share of history, and it holds space for its historical buildings right alongside the modern. It has wonderful communities and cultures. Milwaukeens are a wonderful mixed bag of down-to-earth folks, who know how to seize the good days and how to weather the bad ones.
How did the idea for Gene’s Supper Club come to life?
The concept of the supper club was originally developed by some members of our management team. Recognizing Gene’s desire to extend the business season into the winter months, we explored the possibility of remaining open during the colder season. Historically, efforts to stay open in winter have been sporadic and generally unsuccessful, primarily due to the publics association of us with warm weather.
During previous attempts to operate in winter, we observed a unique charm akin to that of a cozy cabin or chalet. However, this ambience alone was not sufficient to attract significant business. We needed a different approach. This led to the development of the supper club concept.
There is a very talented team here that desired to spread its creative wings and the supper club allows for that. We knew we had the “chops” to deliver that concept based on our 30th Anniversary dinner back in 2022. Gene has had a longstanding vision that was realized when we hosted a formal five-course dinner with drink pairings on our patio. The picnic tables were dressed with white linens, we had a cellist and violinist, and the guests were formally dressed. It was one of the most memorable evenings we have hosted to date—and it has set the stage, and the bar, for the supper club.
What’s your favorite part about what you’re doing?
Watching people having a good time makes everything all worthwhile. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, which is evident in our menu and our establishment – I mean we have Chi-Chi doors! Most people seem to get us and others…well…they get over us. 😊
What can people expect when going to Barnacle Buds/Gene’s Supper Club?
From Barnacle Bud’s they expect a casual and fun environment and from the Supper Club they can expect an enjoyable experience – but delivered in a more refined way. We are obviously not a true supper club but we are playing one for a few months. And by doing so in our own Barnacle Bud’s way we are offering our guests the opportunity to experience elevated food and libations (something we would not be able to provide in high volumes) We would never be able to keep up with ice cream drinks in the summer! There was so much thought and passion involved with the creation of this pop-up and based on the feedback that we receive it is evident to those who have decided to try us.
Anything else we should know about your business or anything you’d like to mention? Any favorite stories?
After 33 years the stories could fill volumes.
Some things that people may know about us is there was a movie filmed on site – Lady In The Box, 2001. Gene and his wife Victoria are mentioned as Bar Patrons on IMDB.
