Last week, we headed south to Greenfield to check out Matari Coffee Co., a coffee shop built around the flavors of Yemen.
Recently opened in May, Matari has a huge selection of Yemeni specialty coffees, matchas, teas and other refreshing drink selections as well as an impressive display of sweets.
We loved the vastness of the drinks and the willingness of the team behind the counter to answer our endless questions on them (and the patience of the customer that was behind us).
We ended up trying their ocean latte which was a fun, summer flavor that literally looked like a slice of beach in a glass. It had a sea salt caramel espresso base and was topped with blue butterfly tea, sea salted caramel cold foam, and organic graham crackers.
With our second drink, the Adeni Chai, we experienced more of the authentic Middle Eastern flavors like black tea, cardamom, and nutmeg.
One of the most impressive parts, outside of the gorgeous interior design of the place, might have been their display cases loaded with pastries, desserts, and sweets. If you have a sweet tooth – this is the place for you.
They had mousses in a wide variety of flavors – like mango, coconut and peanut – which were encased in a hard, edible shell shaped like the ingredient it was inspired by. There was Dubai cheesecake, baklava cheesecake, chocolate cups filled with tiramisu, croissants, honeycomb bread, and lot’s more to choose from.
We got a slice of Dubai cheesecake, a tiramisu cup, and a piece of the honeycomb bread. The soft and pillowy bread was easily our favorite since it’s baked fresh, filled with pockets of cream cheese, and then drizzled with honey.
If you’re a fan of pistachio, the Dubai cheesecake is a must-try, and the tiramisu cup has all the flavors you love with the extra crunch of chocolate on the outside.
If you’re looking to shake up your regular coffee run in the morning and taste flavors from halfway around the world, the 15-20 minute drive from Milwaukee to Matari is worth it!
