The Milwaukee Treats with a National Fanbase (and a Dog’s Seal of Approval)

Before Charlee Bear became a household name in the world of dog treats, it was just a crunchy little idea passed between friends. Literally. A low-calorie, limited-ingredient recipe that worked magic on dogs’ stomachs and didn’t crumble in your pocket? The Gottsacker family saw the potential and turned it into something bigger.

In 1992, what started as a homegrown project out of St. Francis quickly gained traction. Pet parents loved the simplicity. Dogs loved the crunch. And just like that, the original Charlee Bear treat became a staple in treat jars across the country.

But Gott Pet Products didn’t stop there.

Fueled by a mission to offer honest, wholesome food without cutting corners, the family-run company kept innovating. Over the years, Charlee Bear expanded into five treat lines—from doggy granola (yep, Bearnola Bites exist) to functional bites that support gut health, skin, coat, and joints. They even launched a new topper line packed with functional ingredients and palatability boosters for picky eaters.

And if you think they were going to stop at treats? Think again.

In 2018, they acquired Hound & Gatos, a premium canned food brand built on the same ethos: high-protein, no-nonsense, species-appropriate nutrition. Originally launched in 2003, Hound & Gatos was one of the first brands to embrace paleo-style, filler-free wet food. For the Gottsackers, it wasn’t just a business decision—it was the natural next chapter.

“We believe every pet deserves access to high-quality ingredients,” they told us. “And we’re not into trends. We’re into trust.”

But growing a national brand from a quiet suburb of Milwaukee? That comes with some challenges.

Like fighting for shelf space in a market stuffed with buzzwords and bargain-bin competitors. Or staying visible when every week there’s a “newest, healthiest” treat on TikTok.

Still, Charlee Bear hasn’t just survived—it’s thrived. Pet parents are loyal. Retailers keep making room. And the brand’s commitment to quality hasn’t budged one inch.

“Our proudest moments are the ones you can’t see—like the reviews from pet owners who say our products changed their dog’s life. Or the retailers who believed in us early and still do.”

Being based in Milwaukee has played a big role in that story.

The company is still proudly rooted in St. Francis, and the team credits the city’s work ethic, pet-friendly culture, and small-business spirit for much of their success.

“Milwaukee has this kind of quiet grit. It’s honest, hardworking, and loyal—just like the people who shop our brands.”

And while they’ve grown far beyond city limits, Milwaukee will always be home.
